Welcome to Potters Bar Choral Society

We are a group of about forty people whose philosophy is to sing and have fun! Although we often sing from the classical repertoire, we also perform other styles such as swing, Gilbert & Sullivan and folk music. New members are welcome to join at any time without audition - we just ask for commitment and enthusiasm. We would particularly welcome people wishing to sing tenor.

Coronavirus

We are rehearsing via Zoom - at 8pm every Tuesday for around an hour.

Why not sing with us?

Being stuck in lock-down is challenging but singing can help! Why not give one of our Zoom-based rehearsals a try with no obligation! Just contact us for more details.

Programme for 2021 - 2022

About us

Background

Established in 1961, we have been making music for over 52 years, contributing to the artistic and cultural life of Potters Bar and the surrounding area. With a repertoire ranging from Verdi to Gershwin, Mozart, Handel, JS Bach, Sir Arthur Sullivan and many other composers, the PBCS enjoy singing a wide variety of choral works, oratorio, part songs, opera and lighter music. Most importantly, the emphasis is on having fun!

The choir is not afraid to do things on a large scale: in 2019 we performed Carmina Burana with the Lumia Choir, the Hemel Hempstead Singers and the Hemel Symphony Orchestra. We performed the Brahms German Requiem in May 2008 with the Hemel Hempstead Singers forming a choir of 60 with a 45 piece orchestra. In 2002 we joined with the Harrow Philharmonic Choir and the Trinity Orchestra for two memorable performances of the Verdi Requiem.

Rehearsals

Coronavirus: currently we are not meeting in person - we are meeting via Zoom.

We meet every Tuesday from 8-10 pm at St Mary's Church Hall, The Walk, Potters Bar EN6 1QQ. Membership fees averages out at about £3 per rehearsal although we don't ask new members to make a commitment until they have attended three rehearsals. We offer reduced subscriptions for retired, non-waged and student members. There is no audition and we ask only for enthusiasm and a commitment to attend regularly. Sight singing is not a prerequisite for membership and we provide rehearsal downloads in all four voices for many of our chosen pieces.
